siteDirector .NET Overview

  • Eliminate All HTTP 404 File or Directory Not Found Errors

The main objective of siteDirector .NET is to eliminate all 404 error possibilities as web visitor or search engine spider may experience.  By ensuring every request against your web site results in a valid resource found, your web site will gain credibility among your visitors and search engines.

  • Operate completely self-contained, no external dependencies

siteDirector .NET is a very small ASP.NET application that requires no external dependencies other then to run on a Windows server with the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installed.   siteDirector .NET works on any web site, not only ASP.NET web sites communicating directly with the Internet Information Service (IIS) receiving notifications of 404 errors.  As IIS hands off 404 error messages siteDirector .NET can then use its powerful "in-memory" lookup table to determine instantly how to handle the missing resource and redirect the visitor to a valid resource without the visitor ever seeing a delay of any kind.

  • No expensive databases such as Microsoft SQL Server Required

siteDirector .NET requires NO databases as it has its own proprietary data store for the fastest possible "in-memory" mappings.  By eliminating the need for a round trip to a database server, search of the database, then return to the redirector, siteDirector .NET maintains unmatched performance in redirects.  Additionally, there are no licensing headaches or expenses required to run siteDirector .NET.  Simply FTP the siteDirector .NET files to your web site and immediately begin using this award winning utility.

  • Provide fastest possible lookups for instant redirects

siteDirector .NET maintains its resource maps in memory at all times, with a negligible memory requirement.  The fastest possible lookup database is one that resides in RAM and siteDirector .NET was designed from the ground up to use this lightning fast method for its data storage.  No round trips are required to a physical database and expensive database connections are completely eliminated.

  • Log all 404 errors for webmaster mapping or indication of outdated referrers

It is important to see what resources visitors or search engines are seeking so the referrers (affiliates, etc.) can be updated with new information that they may be requesting from your web sites.   siteDirector .NET logs all 404 errors, unless logging is disabled, allowing webmasters to see what resources may be missing within their web structure.  siteDirector .NET also incorporates an e-mail system where batch levels of 404 errors requested can be e-mailed to webmasters, taking the information to the user, not requiring the user to check any web interfaces to monitor activity.

  • Provide smart handlers to automatically decide the required resource

siteDirector .NET's configuration is extremely simple and can be configured in less than five minutes from the time the files are copied to the web server.  siteDirector .NET allows the use of wildcards, for example, downl* would catch all download requests and map them to the resource as configured.  siteDirector .NET also empowers the use of "tokens" such as "Log then Redirect - LTR" or "Redirect No Log - RNL" and other tokens that make mapping siteDirector .NET a breeze.

  • Support multi-homed domains in Internet Information Services (IIS)

For those with multiple domain names pointing to one IIS web site configuration, siteDirector .NET can also detect incoming domain requests and map them as desired in the siteDirector .NET handler section.  siteDirector .NET takes no shortcuts in its functionality allowing webmasters to cover all bases in the number one objective of ensuring 404 errors are eliminated within your web sites.

  • Work with all file types that run under IIS (PHP, ASP, HTM, ASPX, etc.)

siteDirector .NET, although an ASP.NET application, can work with any web site hosted on a Windows server running under Internet Information Services (IIS), the standard host for Windows server web sites.  Therefore if you're running a PHP web site, or one with nothing but HTM or HTML web pages, ASP pages, you name it, siteDirector .NET works with all web sites!  siteDirector .NET actually has nothing to do with your specific web site, is simply listens to messages from IIS receiving 404 error messages, then determining how to redirect the missing resource.  siteDirector .NET is proven, mature, and can handle any demand.

  • Maintain minimal footprint and required resources, maintain idle state when unused

One of the goals of siteDirector .NET was to essentially run "unnoticed."  siteDirector .NET maintains a negligible footprint on the server while maintaining its extremely small lookup table in memory for lightning fast redirects.  We certainly enjoy the attention of success, but we prefer siteDirector .NET remain the unsung hero on every server where server administrators would never realize siteDirector .NET was ever running.

  • Provide batch e-mail notifications of 404 errors

Our motto is taking information "to the customer" and not requiring customers to make routine checks on applications, updates, etc.  siteDirector .NET  incorporates an e-mail notification system that will remain idle until a specified quantity of 404 resources are collected, then e-mail the batch of 404's to a specified e-mail address, mark the 404's as "read" then sit idle again.

  • Take the worry out of migrating to new web sites or updating existing web sites

One of the main concerns with building a new web site or updating an existing site is breaking users Favorites or Bookmarks, losing rank in search engines, having many links that will now be broken in search engines, etc.  siteDirector .NET takes the worry away and ensures no matter what web site visitor or search engine spider you have calling a resource "will" find a valid resource and never see the 404 error page again.
